Grindr - the Opera - book, music and Lyrics by Erik Ransom. The Union Theatre, 229 Union Street, London SE1 to 8 July 2023. 4****. William Russell.

Lavishly staged - David Shield's set is one of the best the Union has ever had - with the band under musical director Aaron Clingham doing full justice to the score this revival directed by William Spencer is something to relish from start to finish. It will inevitably get the LGBT audience who are probably all familiar with the dating ap Grindr but it is an opera for everyone. The plot is no more bizarre than some that Verdi set to music - Il Trovatore comes to mind - and certainly nothing that happens will shock even Aunt Edna these days. The evening is presided over by Grindr (Christian Lunn, statuesque, commanding and in good voice), who has been woken from sleep, and two sidekicks in natty blue satin pants who wheel beds on and off and generally control what the lovers - Tom (Billy J Vale) doing fresh young and fairly innocent perfectly, and Devon, doctor in a special clinic (Santino Zapico a little less innocent) - get up to. Among Devon's patients is Don (Derek Walker), a middle aged and rather nasty businessman who gets up to mildly shocking things, certainly nothing you don't read about in the tabloids or see on after the watershed television, with Jack (James Lowrie), anything but innocent and for money will do anything, which he regrets). There is, of course, a revelation to come. It is all done with style, has clearly been thoroughly rehearsed, which is not always the case with fringe productions, and looks terrific, again not always the case. The musical parodies are clever, fun to spot, the performances good all round - for once the choreography by director Spencer serves the show - and the awful Don gets his comeuppance as Dons in opera do. Handsome staged, well sung, funny and perceptive about the world of Grindr - what more could anyone ask? Much more fun than I Kissed a Boy that is for sure.
