Feel god Gothic
There is clearly a large fan base for the Adams family judging by the substantial and enthusiastic audience at the Hippodrome. Whether it stems from the 60s, or from the later film, who knows, but they are, judging by the number of young people watching, also nurturing a new generation of fans.

The Adams family are a strange and macabre family living in the US, characters out of a Gothic horror story really. Except they are well-meaning people and their eccentricities get them into a lot of bother. The plot in this tale is simple; Adams daughter, cross-bow wielding Wednesday, falls for an all-American clean living boy; he and his parents are invited to meet the entire extended Adams family at dinner – and complications ensue.

This is an entirely good-natured show, with hundreds of bad-taste jokes – all in the very best of taste. The music is lively and on occasion wiitty. Performances are strong. But the real pleasure is in recognition, the child-like pleasure we all have in seeing again things we hold dear.

The best numbers are in the second half. Morticia's dance number DEATH IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER is greatly funny and she is deliciously backed-up by her Ancestors. Morticia is played in elegant Gothic style by Samantha Womack, and her philosophy of life 'Life is like a tightrope walk with a coffin at the end' has much to recommend it. Wednesday and Lucas (Carrie Hope Fletcher and Oliver Ormson) duet beautifully in CRAZIER THAN YOU and it has a lovely edgy accompaniament.

It's a crazy world all right, and all the better for it. and it's themes of celebrating difference and being true to your reall inner self warm the cockles of your heart.
