2013 Pick of the Year - Frances Grin

London based Frances Grin, picks out two top plays.

This year's most memorable show goes out to The Print Room again for their production of Harold Pinter's The Dumb Waiter. Being a big Pinter fan myself, I was excited to see this revival and impressed by the finesse of Jamie Glover's direction. The Print Room converted their main space into a seedy, lifeless basement where two hit men get ready for their next target (only to find that it's one of them). This production was complete with excellent performances by Joe Armstrong and Clive Wood who both painfully embodied that 'Pinter-esque' willingness to pointlessly carry-on.

Another mention goes out to Toneelgroep Amsterdam's Scenes from a Marriage. The renowned Dutch company returned to the Barbican in November with this intimate and raw production that explored the breakdown of a marriage (adapted from Ingmar Bergman). This company is an international gem and one to look out for upon their next visit to London.
