“Barb at seventy - one hell of a birthday party.”
Stockport’s cabaret star decided to celebrate by holding a three day party doing what she does best – singing to her friends and fans in cabaret and where better in London than Crazy Coqz in the basement of Zedel? She chose a different repertoire each night. I saw her on the second night and the lady was on fire. The voice was fine fettle, she had, as always, an instant rapport with her audience and the choice of songs showed off her range – she can be sad, she can be funny, she can be quite wicked. Songs by Springsteen, Dylan- Chimes of Freedom … By Ewan MacColl – a glorious rendering of Sweet Thames Flow Softly – Hank Williams’ The River of Life, Lazy Afternoon, Take Me to the River – but her devotees know what to expect - and they got it. On this particular night her accompanist was Simon Wallace, who also played for her when she was doing cabaret at the Carlisle Hotel, producing marvellous sound from the grand piano. It was quite simply one hell of a birthday party.
